A few tips using well established crime prevention principles and how to be more aware of crime being reported in your area…

Target hardening

Simply make your home more difficult to break into - consider upgrading your doors, windows and locks.

Target removal

Relocating valuable items (for instance, high value tools from a potentially vulnerable garage).

Reducing the means

Make sure ladders and other tools useful to burglars are not easily accessible

Reducing the payoff

Use property marking or GPS trackers (especially bikes) to increase traceability of valuables.

Access control

Very important. Stop criminals getting into your space, particularly back gardens (good fencing and secure gates)

Surveillance

Burglars don’t want to be seen or heard - think about CCTV and motion lights.

Environment change

Cut back hedges for a more open view, maybe introduce prickly shrubs in boundaries to discourage intruders.

Rule setting

Be clear this is your property. Signs like “No trespassing” - make it plain.

Increase the chance of being caught

Consider investing in CCTV and alarm systems. It’s a fact - burglars do tend to avoid homes with alarm boxes and cameras on view.
